Melanie Butler

Let’s start with your name…

Melanie Butler

Q2 What do you do as a freelancer?

I deliver copywriting, content writing and strategy services for small, medium, and women-led businesses everywhere.

Q3 How long have you been doing it for?

2.5 years

Q4 What inspired you to become a freelancer?

The pandemic happened, and I left a job in a toxic team that made me the saddest person around. Being flexible so I could look after my children, but also doing something I’d always loved but hadn’t thought to pursue properly—they were the catalysts during a very interesting time!

Q5 What do you think the benefits of being a freelancer are?

Flexibility, autonomy and creative freedom.

Q6 What are the biggest challenges you think freelancers face at the moment?

Security—it’s that feast or famine cycle that is hard to break. Also, confidence, because it can be difficult to maintain momentum and energy on the self-development front when you’re working alone at home.

Q7 What do you think is the best resource you have found to use as a freelancer?

Unsure as this is the first year I’m proactively building my business and looking outward, but I can let you know later this year 🙂

Q8 What one piece of advice would you give to other/aspiring freelancers?

If you’re miserable in a 9-5 office job and prefer to do something you love, it’s a great change to make. Although, be warned you don’t get all the tangible perks!

Q9 What is your favourite project you have ever worked on?

Launching and working with an eclectic Melbourne streetwear brand that speaks to a truly unique demographic—I’ve been with them through the planning stages and onto the building of an amazing community!
