Véronita Va | Motion Designer : Art Direction, Design, 2D Animation and Illustration

Q1 Let’s start with your name…

Véronita Va

Q2 What do you do as a freelancer?

I’m a motion designer specialising in art direction, design, 2D animation and illustration.

Q3 How long have you been doing it for?

7 years

Q4 What inspired you to become a freelancer?

I never planned to become a freelancer.

I was working as an employee for a digital agency until I decided to take a break to enrol in a motion design course online. Up until that point, I was only self-taught, but I wanted to specialise in that field. I had planned to return to full-time work after completing the course. However, while doing it, a contact of mine reached out and gave me a few freelance gigs. I found myself enjoying it and have been freelancing ever since.

Q5 What do you think the benefits of being a freelancer are?

Working as a freelancer has been an incredible opportunity for me to expand my skills as a designer and professional. I enjoy taking on new challenges and working with diverse clients and industries, which has allowed me to grow at a much faster pace than when I was employed full-time.

The benefits of freelancing are endless, but a few of my favourites are the ability to work from home on my own schedule, the freedom to choose the brands I work with, and the possibility to invest time and energy in my own business and career development.

Q6 What are the biggest challenges you think freelancers face at the moment?

The market has been really volatile in the past few years and I have no doubt that my industry will be affected by the rise of AI technologies. We will need to learn how to quickly upskill and adapt.

Q7 What do you think is the best resource you have found to use as a freelancer?

Freelancing may sometimes feel isolating and make you doubt your abilities, especially during downtime. However, connecting with other freelancers or professionals in your industry can be invaluable. In my experience, most freelancers are willing to have a conversation, exchange knowledge and offer assistance. So, don’t hesitate to reach out and learn from others.

Q8 How have you adapted to freelancing in 2024?

I’m lucky to be in a position where most of my work can be done remotely and my goal this year is to broaden my network beyond Australia.

Q9 What one piece of advice would you give to other/aspiring freelancers?

I highly recommend starting off as an employee to gain experience in a professional setting. Once you have a good understanding of how your industry operates and feel confident in your abilities, you can transition into freelancing. However, freelancing can be challenging, and it’s important to develop resilience. Believe in yourself, work hard, learn how to manage your finances, establish clear boundaries with your clients, and prioritise your mental health and work-life balance.

Q10 What is your favourite project you have ever worked on?

I had the opportunity to work on the 2019 Australian Of The Year award show. It was a challenging project with lots of deliveries and tight deadlines. However, the team I worked with was exceptional, and I feel proud of the work we accomplished together. As one of my first major freelance projects, it felt like a significant milestone for me.
